âWELL, AINâT YOU TWO A sight.â Mammy marched into my chamber as Whitney stepped from behind the privacy screen, dressed in menâs apparel.
âI donât lak et one bit. Not one bit, I tell ya.â She balled her hands on her ample hips. âDem soldiers git ahold of ya, dey gwine have demselves a grand olâ time wid two purty gals lak you.â
âOh, hush, Mammy. Donât talk like that. I wonât be drowned in your fears today,â I said with a scowl. Nerves had chased me all day, and her grievances wouldnât help.
âEt ainât fear but good sense. You two shouldnât be out dere on dem roads alone.â
âIt hasnât stopped us before.â I fastened the last button on my husbandâs shirt before donning his coat.
âAnd you ainât bin in de middle of a war âfore.â The creases in her forehead deepened. âI knowed you put me in my grave âfore my time. Done knowed et since I laid my eyes on ya.â
âWould you prefer that Kipling stays? You saw what happened today. Itâs too dangerous.â
âI know he got to go, but why canât Jones take him?â
âBecause we need Jones here in case the Federals show up.â
She huffed and grumbled under her breath.
Whitney pinned up her auburn locks before setting a floppy hat overtop and pulling it snuggly down. In an extravagant show, she twirled around for us to get a good look at her. âWell, how do I look?â Her grin spread from ear to ear.
âLike Ruby when she showed up here in disguise with Kipling some years back.â The image of Ruby flashed in my mindâs eye.
âWell, itâs been a while since you and I have been on an adventure.â
âAdventure?â Mammyâs voice rose. âIs dat what we are calling et? Dis war has gone to evvyoneâs head. Iâm sick of dem soldier boys lying all over de house, bleeding all over my floors. De sooner dis war is over, de better. You know I lak a cleanââ
âYes, Miss Rita, we know. You like a clean house,â Whitney said brightly. âJust think, when this war is over, they will be gone, and you will continue to raise hell for years to come.â
Mammy scoffed and narrowed her eyes. âDat ainât no fitting way for a lady to talk. Ef I were your mama, I would haveââ
âPut the fear of God in me?â Whitneyâs eyes glittered with sly merriment.
I held my breath as the bear before us exited her den and unhinged her jaw. âNow you listen hereââ
âOh, Mammy, I wish you wouldnât fuss so. We will be careful and return by weekâs end.â I strode to the looking glass and regarded the young man gazing back at me. I imagined if I had a younger brother, he would resemble this reflection.
âHave et your way. I know you gwine to anyway.â Mammy came to stand beside me and fully inspected my reflection.
âWhat?â I said when her brow puckered.
âEf someone git a couple feet from you, dey gwine to know you ainât men. Ef you fixing to do disâwait here; Iâll be back.
